Nathan Simms Jr. is a seasoned housing and community development leader with more than 20 years of experience across federal, municipal and local housing agencies. He has held key leadership roles with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the District of Columbia Department of Housing and Community Development, and the Housing Authority of Prince George’s County. Most recently, he served as executive director of a Virginia housing authority, overseeing a broad portfolio of housing operations and redevelopment initiatives.

Simms assumed the role of CEO of the Charleston Housing Authority on May 4, 2026. In this position, he leads the organization’s efforts to modernize and reinvest in its housing portfolio, expand access to affordable housing, and strengthen services that support resident stability and opportunity.

Simms is known for his collaborative, results-driven leadership style, with a focus on operational excellence, transparent communication, strong partnerships with local stakeholders and advocating for residents. His experience spans both housing operations and large-scale redevelopment, positioning him to navigate complex challenges while advancing long-term, sustainable solutions for the communities he serves.

Simms also brings a deep personal connection to Charleston. His grandparents, aunts, uncles and mother were all born, raised and lived in downtown Charleston. His mother is a graduate of C.A. Brown High School, further grounding his ties to the community he now serves.

He is focused on strengthening trust, delivering measurable results and ensuring the Housing Authority remains a responsible steward of public resources while expanding opportunity for residents.

A Washington, D.C., native, Simms holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Bowie State University and a master’s degree in public administration from American University.
